Seeing light where others see shadow.

I am Masoud Hassanzade, a photographer — first and foremost an analogue photographer. I insist on this word, “analogue,” because for me photography is not simply an art. It is a practice: a way of working, of preserving time on film, of approaching the world through a process that is only possible when you shoot analogue.

I started with a camera older than I was, a Nikon FM10. I bought a roll of film, and from the very first shot I fell in love with this way of photographing: pausing before the shutter, the limit of 36 frames, the wait to develop and finally see the result, the chemistry of the darkroom, the image on film printed onto photographic paper. All of these processes that only happen when you work with analogue photography.

Are these enough reasons to choose this form of art — this practice? I think they are.

I also work digitally. I am not stuck in the past, nor am I nostalgic, paralysed by some perfect image of what came before and unable to see the future. I love photography in all its forms.
